I am a communication designer with a focus on user experience and print. My practice sits at the intersection of publication design and experience design using visual communication as a way of exploring and understanding design. The project 'vinyl_final1' is an amalgam of different visual communication disciplines: photography, typography and print – with the aim of creating a user experience. I wanted to create the experience of discovery, coupled with my love for vinyl, photography and the materiality of print. Just like with digging through records and finding treasure in a crate, I translated that experience into my project. Inspired by the laneways of Melbourne, I was careful to avoid any pretentiousness and interpreted the grungy vibe by housing my vinyls in a commonly found object – a milk crate. As the browser goes through the crate, they will soon discover that the album carries a slightly polished look – a gem. Upon picking up an album and unpacking it, it is at this moment they realise that there is discovery ahead. That this crate is more than just an object that contains, but an architecture of design.
