Vivian Liu, Inflammatory. Publication design, 2018.
Inflammatory' is an incomplete list of banned books that explores the ironic effects of censorship and the sensitivities of authority, whether bureaucratic or dictatorial. I arranged them chronologically by date of ban to highlight the circular movement of time in history and memory. Individual entries outline conflicts racial, religious, political, military, sexual, and moral, further extrapolated on in a glossary that documents current views of those significant historical and cultural contexts. The grand narrative the chronology offers is attractive, but I was also painfully aware of how my choices changed the 'history of the world' this book portrays. Ultimately, this project aims to present a set of data from which the viewer can draw their own conclusions.
